It was a very good thing when Grayson Waller suddenly showed up on NXT last week and announced his intentions of winning the NXT Championship. After all, Tony D’Angelo hasn’t been a very charismatic champion, and he’s a much less interesting character than he was back when he was running the D’Angelo Family. Waller brings a real story to the table because he’s dripping with talent, but his main roster career turned into a flop after he transitioned from half of a tag team with Austin Theory to the third wheel of The New Day. Now, Waller is back to where he made a name for himself and he’s going for the title that evaded him the first time around. That’s a story I can get behind. Plus, it’s true what he said about NXT’s men’s division. It hasn’t been an electric factory since the promotions of Oba Femi, Je’Von Evans, and Trick Williams.

We know Waller is right because there hasn’t been any homegrown talent challenging D’Angelo lately. Naraku failed to win the title after coming over from Japan, and now it’s recent TNA acquisition Cruz Montana and Waller fighting for the number one contender spot. Keanu Carver is someone who could be a future NXT Championship contender, but he’s stuck in a weird feud with EK Prosper that saw Carver pick up a win this week while unlocking a more gentle side of himself that is very different from the intimidating heel he was playing before.

It’s also easy to imagine Saquon Shugars or Dion Lennox challenging for the title once they are done with their own beef, but it would be nice to see them in more singles matches before that happens. Maybe Jackson Drake can emerge as a threat following his lengthy run with the Evolve Championship? Drake has been doing more managing than fighting lately, but maybe that will change after The Vanity Project dropped the NXT Tag Team Championships to Myles Borne and Tavion Heights this week. I was a little surprised to see NXT North American Champion Borne become a double champ, but he’s shown a ton of potential in the ring. I’d love to see how he is as a heel, but it might be a challenge getting heat on a him since being deaf is such a big part of his story.

As for the NXT women’s division that Waller got a pop for in the midst of his heel promo, it might be getting a little weaker in the immediate future. That’s because I don’t see where Lola Vice goes after she failed to win back the NXT Women’s Championship from Kendal Grey in this week’s Underground Match. Vice had been undefeated in a stipulation seemingly made for her MMA background, but even though she put Grey to sleep, the match kept going because of the referee being hit by an errant spinning backfist. Grey was revived by her best friend Wren Sinclair and then used an armbar to tap out Vice after the referee came to.

Grey beating Vice at a stipulation that favors Vice is another notch in Grey’s belt as she continues to ascend rapidly in WWE. Meanwhile, I’m expected Vice to premiere on the main roster sometime between now and the WWE’s trip to Mexico City in early September. Vice’s shoes will probably be filled by Kelani Jordan, who had made sure everyone knows how much she deserves a shot at Grey’s title. It will also be interesting to see what happens with Thea Hail and Jaida Parker after their tag team win on Tuesday over Nikkita Lyons and Karmen Petrovic. Will the fan-favorite babyfaces pursue the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships, or could they split and challenge Jordan for the number one contender spot? Hopefully we’ll find out next week.

Before that, we have a very interesting episode of SmackDown to look forward to with Kevin Owens set to appear for the first time since becoming the number one contender for the Undisputed WWE Championship at SummerSlam. He’ll get a warm reaction from the fans, but that might not last since the man who holds the title is one of the most popular wrestlers in the world, CM Punk. There’s also the issue of Sami Zayn to deal with. Zayn probably already felt betrayed by Owens showing up at SummerSlam, since the match to decide the number one contender was scheduled to be one-on-one between Zayn and Finn Balor. Then, Owens not only turned the match into a Fatal Four-Way (along with the other addition of Gunther by general manager Nick Aldis), but he ended up pinning Zayn to get the win. We could see Zayn full embrace his heel role tonight after weeks of walking the tightrope between babyface and heel.

We also don’t know how Tiffany Stratton will react to her best friend Chelsea Green knocking over her ladder and ruining her shot at the Interim WWE Women’s Championship on the way to claiming the prize for herself during the five-woman ladder match at SummerSlam. Maybe Stratton will respect the move since it was every women for herself, but you know how jealous these wrestlers can be.

One more bit of fallout from SummerSlam is Randy Orton returning to action and hitting Cody Rhodes with an RKO to stop him from winning the Undisputed WWE Championship. With Owens taking over the role of number one contender, Orton and Rhodes seem destined to rekindle their rivalry from WrestleMania.
